TriSport Canada opened up race registration for the 2010 series today so it was time to register for the lead up events to take me to the Muskoka Ironman 70.3. Being new at this I wanted to slip in a Sprint length triathlon to get my feet wet, learn the day of process, transitions and get a feel for the sport from a competitive perspective. I also wanted to fit in a longer Olympic or Long Course triathlon, something closer to the 70.3 length as a confidence builder.
I asked Mark and Luis at Mark Allen Online what they thought of the idea, how to incorporate this into my current training plans, and integrate the tapers and recovery time from each event and they thought there was a lot of value to pushing myself every month with a shorter length triathlon, without going overboard. They also highly recommended the events from a learning perspective to understand the overall race logistics, transitions and what it feels like to go from swim to bike to run back to back.
Looking at my schedule this is what I was able to plan for the summer…
- June 6th – Milton Sprint Triathlon – 750M Swim, 30KM Bike, 7KM Run
- July 4th – Peterborough Sprint Triathlon – 750M Swim, 20KM Bike, 5KM Run (Tentative)
- July 24th – Muskoka Long Course Triathlon – 2KM Swim, 55KM Bike, 15KM Run
- September 12th – Muskoka Ironman 70.3 – 1.9KM Swim, 94KM Bike, 21.8KM Run
The only one that is marked tentative is the July 4th Peterborough Sprint triathlon. It comes a at the end of a busy June, on top of the Milton race there is also the Conquer Cancer (feel free to support my ride) back to back century ride and the 24 Hour Summer Solstice mountain bike relay on the agenda. Right now it is on the radar, come June if I feel good I’ll go, if not I won’t, and if it sells out no biggie, wasn’t part of the plan. The rest I am registered for, paid in full and I am looking forward to them.

I’m doing my Try a tri in Milton on the 6th and my sprint on the 24th of July. How expensive is it? I should probably register now so I can’t back out.
The Sprint length tri’s are $60 but there is an HST savings to be had of about $5 per event if you register before May 1st. Reg fees also go up sometime in May as well!
Looks another action packed summer. Are you targeting any of the Epic 8hr MTB races?
My 2010 season includes all three 8 hr events with a target for wrapping up with a Solo 8Hr in September!
Yeah the 2 24 Hour relays and two of the 8 hour relays are on the agenda too!
