Apparently I have had a pacing problem. It was never an issue on the swim because I get into a comfort zone and stay there and never really push it hard, luckily I am a decent swimmer. The bike I always felt was my strong suit so I would have good rides. The run has always been my nemesis. Turns out what I could ride (and did ride) was not what I should ride and even though the bike never felt overly hard it was too hard considering I have to run afterwards. It got worse this year as a) I was aiming to be more competitive so speed was essential and 2. my running had improved so I figured I had solved my problem.
Wrong.
I learned a lesson and it was proven this past weekend at Milton. Solid swim, well paced bike, strong run. That is how you go fast.
I blamed the heat for my run issues in Knoxville. Yes it was hot and it was hilly. But that is not why my pace dropped 1:30/KM from my training paces.
Lesson learned. Point proven. Time to dust off and move on.
Watch out……
